The main purpose of the cardio-vascular activity with elliptical machines is no different than the use of treadmills or stationary bikes, increase aerobic capacity. Depending on your current level of aerobic fitness, you may find initial attempts at training intervals rather difficult, but limit your bursts of up to 60 seconds and your normal rate of 60 seconds, the body will soon adapt.
The a great advantage with elliptical machines is that cardio workouts can be done in reverse movement. If you target combustion fat at a steady pace in your workout or do interval training, objectives of the reverse rotation of all muscles you would not normally use. Optimal fat burning can be done with this motion, as the heart and muscles need work much harder.
If you decide to use the elliptical machine for aerobic fitness and burning fat is undesirable entirely up to you. Always be sure to consult a doctor before taking on these workouts, especially if you have been injured or have a history of cardiac or respiratory problems in the past.
Whatever the intensity of the workout, elliptical machines are far a very pleasant way to burn fat and improve aerobic capacity. By working hard and keep motivated, you may well on your way to achieving that perfectly toned body.
