Whats a lumbar puncture like and why did you lie on your back then?
I'm going to do a lumbar puncture and read about the procedure so I'd just like to hear some personal experiences. They told me I'm gonna have to sleep on their backs for at least 3 hours before I can start moving again, then they always said that I spend most of the rest of the day in bed. Does anyone have an explanation for that?
A lumbar puncture is as spinal anesthesia, but the needle is slightly larger to allow the cerebral spinal fluid to be collected (a spinal needle is so small it would never take to collect the liquid). The skin on your back is the only part innervated well – so it is anesthetized with local anesthetic (lidocaine). After that, until they can find a passage between the bones, it is not painful, just uncomfortable because they are very slow in the interest of safety (not going too far by accident) and because you have to to bump and grind on the lower back as a cat all the time. If you're really worried, ask to have an anesthesiologist. ER docs often themselves, but they tend to be somewhat less common (no offense to any ER docs there). Because there is a hole in the fabric or "skin" around your spine spine, it will continue to release some even after the procedure. In setting, you reduce the effect of gravity pushing more fluid, which can produce a "post-spinal headache" if it leaks too Out.
